You Are

"You Are"
What a miraculous sound!
I knew I’d cry when I heard,
The most precious of screams as you came to this earth,
Truly, I can say it was a love I hadn’t felt yet...
They wrapped you in cotton,
With a cap on your head,
And we snuggled all night in that hospital bed,
Stroking your face, I promised you things I will never forget:
“You will grow like a weed,
From the smallest of seeds,
And you will walk as a good and wise man.
You will live and you’ll dream,
And you’ll love and believe,
And as long as I’m living-
You Can.”
We were both so young,
I was consumed by your charms,
And I’d get paid so little, for working so hard,
There were many times my dreams seemed impossible to keep...
But I’d come home to your warmth,
That sweet chubby face,
And everything always fell right into place,
At night, I’d whisper as I tenderly rocked you to sleep:
“You will live by your word,
Which will always be heard,
And on to great things you will plan.
You will question and find,
A deserved peace of mind,
And as long as I’m living-
You Can.”
When things got rough,
As sometimes they are,
And we’d park behind thrift stores to sleep in our car,
Never for once thinking I could let it happen this way…
You’d coo in my arms,
And forgive me at once,
You loved without reason and trust me so much,
I concealed my tears, and found without blinking I’d say:
“Though the world may break you,
Tomorrow will make you,
Know this: you are cherished more than the moon or these stars.
And on this night of nights,
You are my reason for life,
And as long as I’m living-
You Are.” |
