Guelleh, Ismaël Omar (1947- ), président de la république de Djibouti, élu en 1999.

Né à Dire Dawa, ville principale de la province du Harrar en Éthiopie, Ismaël Omar Guelleh est issu d’une famille appartenant au clan des Mamassans, une des composantes de la tribu somali des Issas. Son grand-père, Guelleh Batal, fut l’un des cosignataires du traité plaçant Djibouti sous la dépendance de la France au début du XIXe siècle. En reconnaissance, il obtint le poste de recruteur pour le compte de la Compagnie du chemin de fer franco-éthiopien (CFE) qui construisait la ligne reliant Djibouti à Addis-Abeba. Son père, Omar Guelleh, fut un des premiers instituteurs du territoire constituant alors la Côte française des Somalis. Il suivit ensuite la tradition familiale et entra au service du CFE. [Suite]

Guelleh, Ismaël Omar, (born November 27, 1947 in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia[1]) is the second president of Djibouti. He succeeded his uncle, Hassan Gouled Aptidon, in 1999.

In the late 1960s, Guelleh migrated to Djibouti before finishing high school. He later joined the police, becoming a junior non-commissioned officer. After Djibouti became independent, he became head of the secret police and chief of the cabinet in the government of Hassan Gouled Aptidon. He received training from the Somali National Security Service and then from the French Secret Service, and was intended to become his uncle's successor.
