Mouammar Kadhafi, Mu'amar Al-Qadhafi), (1942 à Syrte, Libye - ) est de facto le chef de l'État de la Libye depuis 1970. En Occident, il est souvent appelé « colonel Kadhafi ». Officiellement, Kadhafi est désigné comme le Guide de la grande révolution de la Grande Jamahiriya arabe libyenne populaire et socialiste.

Al-Kadhafi est le plus jeune enfant d'une famille de paysans bédouins. Il grandit dans la région désertique de Syrte. Il reçut une éducation primaire traditionnelle et religieuse puis il suit les cours de l'école préparatoire de Sebha dans le Fezzan, de 1956 à 1961. Kadhafi et un petit groupe d'amis qu'il rencontre dans cette école, viennent à former le noyau d'un groupe de militants révolutionnaires ayant pour but de s'emparer du pouvoir. Kadhafi s'inspire de Gamal Abdel Nasser, président de l'Égypte voisine, qui se hissa au pouvoir en prônant l'unité arabe. En 1961, Kadhafi est exclu de Sebha à cause de son activisme politique.

Kadhafi étudie le droit à l'Université de Libye. Il entre ensuite à l'Académie militaire de Benghazi en 1963, où il organise avec quelques militants un mouvement secret dans le but de renverser la monarchie libyenne pro-occidentale. Après l'obtention de son diplôme en 1965, Il est envoyé en Grande-Bretagne pour suivre un entraînement supplémentaire au British Army Staff College, et revient en 1966 en tant qu'officier dans le corps des transmissions. Gaddafi was the youngest child born into a peasant family. He grew up in the desert region of Sirte. He was given a traditional religious primary education and attended the Sebha preparatory school in Fezzan from 1956 to 1961. Gaddafi and a small group of friends that he met in this school went on to form the core leadership of a militant revolutionary group that would eventually seize control of the country. Gaddafi's inspiration was Gamal Abdel Nasser, president of neighboring Egypt, who rose to the presidency by appealing to Arab unity. Gaddafi went on to study law at the University of Libya, where he graduated with high grades. He then entered the Military Academy in Benghazi in 1963, where he and a few of his fellow militants organized a secretive group dedicated to overthrowing the pro-Western Libyan monarchy.
