The soldier's Farewell
Author/auteur: Doreen Morfitt (United Kingdom)
Do not mourn, my love,
Though your heart must grieve,
Duty called and I obeyed,
You knew I had to leave.
Do not cry, my love,
Though you didn't think it right,
Yet you understood,
You knew I had to fight.
Do not sigh, my love,
And think it was a waste,
That my life should end,
In this far and distant place.
Do not falter, my love,
When they bring me back to you,
In a coffin made of pine,
Draped in red, white and blue.
Do not stumble, my love,
As you follow in my wake,
Mine was the sacrifice,
That a soldier has to make,
Do not weep, my love,
As I'm laid to rest,
For finally I'm at peace now,
In the place I loved the best.
Do not mourn, my love,
Put flowers on my grave,
Be proud and strong, my love,
But most of all be brave.
